And so it continues…

Like most designers, none of my personal projects are ever finished. Instead of thinking of this as a new website, it seems more like the 32nd revision of a website I began 15 years ago. My work has evolved as much as the technology has evolved. One of the biggest challenges as a working designer is keeping yourself up-to-date both creatively and technically. So not only does posting a new website mean digging through my harddrives and DVDs to access my old projects; it means brushing up on my programming skills.

Did I just say programming skills? I consider myself a designer and a marketeer, with enough “programming skills” to get me into trouble. With a working knowledge of HTML, CSS and Flash I am able to work well real programmers to create professional sites. However, my personal site is something just that – personal. Not only is the purpose to display my work and skills, its an opportunity to exercise my mind, both creatively and technically.

Client	Ko Olina Golf Club, Hawaii

Challenge	95% of activities booked by the over one million visitors to Hawaii each year are booked after they arrive in the islands. This creates intense competition among all the golf courses and activity suppliers. In this flooded marketplace it was becoming increasingly challenging for Ko Olina Golf Club to differentiate its message to golfers.

Goal	Increase pre-arrival booking.

Solution	As more and more people are going online to research their vacations, the internet was the obvious solution. Analyzed previous years’ data to determined which times of day were the most underused. Researched competitors prices and services Set a lower price for mid-day golf rounds to appeal to a broader market. Actively promoted this lower mid-day rate on the Specials page of www.koolinagolf.com. Sent multiple emails to the opt-in database promoting this new rate class and included a live link for online booking.

Concept-Driven Case Study

Client	AJA Studio, Colorado

Challenge	AJA Studio has been a long time client and the principal, Andrew Abraham, was looking to update his stationery package. He has been based in the Vail Valley for over ten years, but had recently added a new studio in Denver. In addition to updating his collateral with the new information, he wanted the collateral to have a new aesthetic, as well as to convey his evolving philosophies as an artist.One single stationery package needed to work for both locations, as well as for the clients that he works with all over the country. In addition, the new aesthetic needed to work with all the existing collateral, including printed materials and a website.

Goal	Create a single stationary package that addresses the issues mentioned above and is visually and conceptually interesting.

Solution	The main visual focus of the stationery package addresses the dichotomy between a Mountain location and a City location. A keyword map was developed with word pairs such as natural vs. man-made, rugged vs. structure, and open air vs. congestion. Each location inherently creates different images in the minds of viewers, and there are elements of both locations in the architectural style of AJA Studio.Details of a steel structure and a rock wall form textured background. Instead of using the standard address format on the business card, we gave the viewer the GPS coordinates to envoke the feeling of expedition and adventure.
